Jin Soon

by Laura Marcove

These days, getting a manicure or pedicure is as rushed as getting your morning cup of café au lait. Nail salons are as prevalent as pizza parlors, and one usually walks out feeling more tense and stressed, even with a smooth polish. But Jin Soon Natural Hand and Foot Spa aims to amend this by keeping the experience peaceful and luxurious, as a true nail salon ought to. Gone are the days of quickie pedicures. Your heels will be soft and your soles will be soothed. From the Essence of Soul, the basic option, to the Magical Clear Slippers Scrub, all of the choices are years ahead of its neighboring competitors. After opening two salons downtown, the owners of Jin Soon decided to treat the Upper East Side with a salon of its very own. The new location is on 73rd between 1st and York Avenues, just far enough from the hustle to give you a sense of calm and quiet.

Walk passed the neon lights beckoning you to come in for cheaper prices. All women and men, of all backgrounds and careers, deserve to have a pedicure done right. Once you enter the tiny salon, you will be immediately at ease. There are no sloppy piles of crinkled magazines, nor are files or cuticle removers or anything else left on top of the desks. Cleanliness is goddessness, and you will feel like one after any of the numerous treatments offered. Jin Soon offers seven different types of manicure and pedicures, all with different materials and indulgences. From milk to seaweed to honey to paraffin, your feet and hands will be thanking you after a winter of high winds and higher heels. With the basic Essence of Soul treatment, you can choose from a list of essential oils from lavender to grapefruit. Mixed with sea salts, it’s a unique pleasure and hard to believe it’s just the beginning of what’s offered.

To be warned in advance, it might be difficult to go back to your usual manicure/pedicure place after such a delicious treatment. The Breath of Milk and Honey treatment uses milk instead of water, followed by a sugar scrub and massage. If the idea of submerging your feet in milk doesn’t sound relaxing to you, just wait and see how soft your skin feels. Bathing your feet in water simply won’t feel enough ever again.

Like its competitors, Jin Soon does offer waxing. But its specialty is with the feet and the hands. Although the focus may simply be on your feet, your whole body will feel in absolute bliss. The small store has much more of a spa feel than any of its surrounding nail competitors. Most importantly, you feel as though the focus is on you and your toes, not the next customer in line. In a time where nail salons tend to treat the customer with as much focus as the local Starbucks barista, it is both refreshing and a treat to have Jin Soon as an addition to the neighborhood.
