New Year’s Eve on the Upper East Side

Now that you have finished decking the halls. Now that Santa and Mrs. Claus have retired to Boca for the rest of the winter. Now that the gifts have been opened and the ugly ones returned. Now, it is time to plan New Year’s Eve.

For those Upper East Siders who would prefer to stay closer to home rather than dealing with the hordes of JV revelers, lack of cabs and annoyances that come with the changing of the calendar, do not fret. Everything you need to ring in 2007 with festive flare and fun is all within reach.
  • Bruno Jamais: 81st between Madison and Fifth (212-396-3444)
    Celebrate in style with a 5 course dinner complete with a midnight champagne toast for just $225. A DJ will spin until 3 am so don’t be surprised if you are elbow to elbow on the dance floor with celebrities such as Chris Noth (aka Mr. Big) or Billy Baldwin who have recently been spotted enjoying Bruno Jamais’ cuisine.

  • Fredericks: Madison Avenue and 66th Street (212-737-7300)
    This Madison Avenue bistro has some amazing French fare in a wonderful sophisticated setting. Try their $100 prix fixe 4-course menu which includes a decadent chocolate tasting for dessert. They will be seating for dinner between 7:30pm and 10pm.

  • Mustang Grill: 2nd Avenue and 85th Street (212-744-9194)
    If you are looking to get rowdy then Giddy Up, partner. Mustang, always a fun and lively place, will be offering a 4 hour open bar from 10pm-2am for $60 and a $99 for a 4- course dinner special.

  • Nica Trattoria: 354 E 84th Street between 1st and 2nd (212-472-5040)
    If you are looking for less fuss and more food, then Nica Trattoria is the place for you. Forgo the streamers and paper hats and indulge in the cuisine. Hearty, fresh and powerful, this Upper East Side Italian gem is offering its “addictive” regular menu as well as “sought-after and inventive” specials for the evening. For quiet ambiance and quality food, you don’t need to go far.

  • L'Absinthe: 227 E 67th Street between 2nd and 3rd (212-794-4950)
    Something sexy and French is the way to welcome 2007, join the other sophisticated diners at L'Absinthe for the $88 per person New Year’s Eve special menu. An exquisite three course menu features a very ample variety and selection of options. Choose the exciting “Trilogy of Fois Gras” appetizer and the “Reinvented Pike Quenelle and Roasted Lobster” or select from the abundant special menu for the evening. Celebrate with Amuse bouches to start and petit-fours to finish off the meal ... all a part of the evening’s unique prix fixe menu.

  • The Big Easy: 2nd Avenue between 92nd and 93rd (212-348-0879)
    THE place to party like you did in 1999! Ok, maybe you were a little younger then, but this rowdy place is reminiscent of the way you used to celebrate New Years. With special packages ranging from $60-$110, be sure to call ahead to get the best rate.

  • Maya: 1192 1st Avenue at 65th Street (212-585-1818)
    While it would be nice to spend New Year’s Eve south of the border in Cancun, you are stuck here in New York. Let your stomach take the journey though, and celebrate New Year’s Eve at this upscale Mexican restaurant. Enjoy the sounds of a live mariachi band while enjoying a 4 course meal complete with champagne toast for $99.

  • Payard: 1932 Lexington Avenue at 73rd street (212-717-5252)
    This elegant French bistro is amazing anytime, but special for New Year’s Eve, Payard will be featuring a signature meal for a prix fixe price of $172. With live music and a midnight champagne toast, this is the place to celebrate with panache.

  • Tavern on 1st: 1678 1st Avenue - between 87th & 88th (212-828-7820)
    Ditch those fancy digs and enjoy a New Year’s Eve filled with fun and festivities for $50. At Tavern on First, you can partake in the open bar and laid back atmosphere. So grab your favorite pair of jeans on your friends and head on over to one of the coolest, low-key bars on the Upper East Side.

  • Saloon: 1st Avenue between 82nd and 83rd (212-570-5454)
    Toast and Bagels! That’s Saloons style. Toast to the midnight hour and then enjoy the 2am bagel buffet. Saloon’s $110 per person event offers a hefty buffet of food, 9pm-2am open bar, a midnight toast and they keep the party energized bagels at 2am.

  • The Grand: 58th Street between Park and Madison (212-308-9455)
    Looking for an upscale VIP party that is sure to have some paparazzi flashing outside? The Grand (formerly Au Bar) in conjunction with legendary chef and Upper East Side dynamo restaurant, Philippe, is hosting what is sure to be a swanky party. For $175 per person, enjoy the 10pm-4am open bar, midnight toast and passed pickups from Philippe’s kitchen. They are also offering VIP packages if you preferred the velvet rope area, give them a call.

  • Iggy’s: 1452 2nd Avenue (212-327-3043)
    Rock and Roll your way into 2007 at Iggy’s Karoake bar. Sing it loud, sing it strong and drink all night long. $35 gets you domestic beer and well drinks from 9pm-1am or upgrade to the $75 package which gets you a full open bar. If you prefer to pay as you go, the cash bar option is available to you as well. Either way, you are guaranteed to drink, sing and party right into the morning hours of the New Year.

  • Arabelle: 37 E 64th Street (212-606-4647)
    The ultra sophisticated restaurant in the legendary Hotel Plaza Athenee, Arabelle offers a special menu during its two seatings for New Year’s Eve. The early seating (6pm-7:45) offers an exciting menu for $95 while the later seating (8-11pm) presents dining options with gusto for $165 per person. Early or late, you will enjoy the culinary delights of acclaimed chef Arven Dhansew’s modern American cuisine.

  • La Houppa: 26 E 64th Street between 5th & Madison (212-317-1999)
    It is a party at La Houppa every night with their “Extraordinary” upscale Italian cuisine where the “attentive and knowledgeable” staff makes your dining experience spectacular. For New Year’s Eve the chef has prepared a plethora of options, from the fresh oysters to the homemade Pear Ravioli to the Branzini baked in sea salt served with sting beans, potatoes and fennel vinaigrette sauce. The menu is a la carte; so you have option of choosing how stuffed you want to be in 2007. Remember, your New Year’s resolution to start a diet does not begin on December 31st and that is a good thing at La Houppa when they have a chocolate soufflé on the dessert menu.
