Hello fellow Upper East Siders!
This is my initial installment in what I hope will be a weekly posting on technology related topics that should be of interest to the community. The first topic I want to cover is Anti-virus software.
There are many reasons for the slow performance of your computer. One of the reasons may be the Anti-virus software you are using. Some of the larger companies out there, such as Norton and McAfee were forerunners in the anti-virus and spyware detection space. However, some of their protection may be a bit overkill for your needs, and may actually be slowing your machine down with processes and constant scanning running in the background and firewall tools that aren't necessary (and may be intrusive).
There are some great FREE options out there to try. AVG Free, Avast! and PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition are great examples of highly effective virus scanning software with a light footprint on your machine. I have 3 Windows based machines in my apt, and I run AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 on each of them. This software, coupled with Windows Firewall and a secure router is all the protection you need for a safe internet surfing and email experience.
I wold love to hear your thoughts, experiences and feedback and any questions you might have. Please feel free to add your comments to this post, or contact me at the information below:
