State News has been operating since 1972. We started out as a single storefront operation in New Jersey which grew into twelve locations. We then took over all the news stands at the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal. In 1979 we opened at the present location 1243 Third Avenue on 72nd street. On September 6, 2006 we had a grand opening at 112 East 86th Street.

We are neighborhood stores and cater to each locations’ needs which vary slightly from store to store. We try our best to keep up with trends and have changed our product mix accordingly. Friendly customer service is a key ingredient in our day to day operation.

	They have serious atitute problem! - My recommendation is "DO NOT SHOP THIS PLACE!" I bought a toy for my kids. Later, I found out the toy has some missing parts. I try to returned it then the store manager started yelling and gave me dirty look. He said he would not return the item because he thinks that I lost some parts then try to return it. How dare! I could not fight any longer. The item was $29.99. I am trying to file suing them at the small claim court. The filing fee for samll claim court is $25. However, I think the money is not matter. The matter is how they run the business. You can buy things from this place but never ever think you can return it!!!

	Don't Recommend Shopping Here - By NY State law register ringups must be visible to customer as the ring up in being made. At the State News (on 3rd Avenue between 71st & 72nd) this isn't the case and as a result they attempted to scam me out of $2.79 cents. Today I made a multi item purchase (4 greeting cards and 3 other items). The items were rung up and I paid for them. After receiving the receipt I walked away from the register ... around the gondola ... and checked my receipt against my purchases. There was a charge for a 5th card that I didn't purchase (that wasn't in the bag). I returned to the register and was told since the item was on the receipt I must have dropped it. The manager (or at least he called himself the manager) who gave me his name as being "Dial" told me I left the store and returned minus the 5th card. Since the store has cameras, I asked him to play the tape to prove I didn't leave the store. It was only when I pulled out my cell phone and began dialing 911, did he tell me to take a $2.79 card (I really wanted my money back ... but to end the situation I took the card). I'll never shop there again. My recommendation to others is not to shop there. But, if you do and you're purchasing multiple items, be sure to match your receipt with the items in the bag before leaving the register.

	The Modern Five & Dime - State Street News is the modern version of the old Five and Dime Store. Looking for greeting cards, children's school supplies, party favors, kids toys, art supplies, newspapers or magazines from everywhere, office supplies, candy and much much more, this the place to go. While few discounts are often available the store usually will have what you are seeking. The staff is always helpful and courteous.
